Liquorice is a vibrant display typeface pulsating with quirky energy and dynamic tone. Using tubular structures and intricate folds as the constructing principle, Liquorice accentuates the interplay between interior and exterior. Drawing inspiration from the three-dimensional overlap of interlocking fingers, the type activates the z-axis, adding depth along with width and height.
The typeface is a result of quick experimentation, where I created the alphabet with my fingers. These gestures of bending, folding and interlocking are captured within the glyphs, translating three-dimensional volumes onto a two-dimensional plane, while retaining a sense of depth.
By activating the z-axis, each character comes to life, creating a sense of volume that visualizes the physicality of folding, overlapping, and interlocking. This transforms negative spaces around the font from flat planes to spatial forms, defining both an exterior and interior space around the character.
Inspired by the creases due to folding and the shadows of the forms on the wall, I developed two additional font variations within the same framework, each embodying a unique optical presence and level of detail.
With its quirky and energetic appearance, this display font is perfect for eye-catching titles and slogans in posters, invitations, and logotypes with optimistic and friendly tones.
