Liquorice is a display typeface and has three different variations that embody a quirky energetic tone. Using the tubular structure and folds as the constructing principle, the font emphasizes interior exterior within the font and the negative space surrounding it. Inspired by three-dimensional overlap of interlocking fingers, the font also activates the z-axis occupying depth along with width and height.
The foundations of the typeface come from a quick experiment in trying to create all alphabets in the Latin language with my fingers. These motions of bending, folding, and interlocking are captured in the glyphs transforming three-dimensional volumes into a two-dimensional design while retaining the sense of depth and physical presence in a flat experience.
By activating the z axis, the font creates a sense of volume where some components appear in front of others to create the physical effect of folding, overlapping and interlocking. This transforms the negative spaces around the font from planar to spatial forms, creating an outside and inside as the glyphs act as containers for the content.
Further inspired by the creases created by the folding and the shadows that these alphabet forms created on a wall, two more font variations were created. Taken as a whole, the Liquorice family makes full use of the wide spectrum of optical density and variation of positive and negative space. All three styles share a common framework, with optical presence and level of detail broadly determining each subfamily’s application
The quirky energetic tone of this display font suits itself to eye-catching titles and slogans for optimistic and friendly designs particularly for posters, invitations, and even logotypes.
